About Five Stars Learning Family Day Care

An approved family day care service with its office in Berwick, Victoria. We register, train and support educators who care for small groups of children in their own homes across Melbourne's south-east.

What we do

Family day care is early childhood education delivered in an educator's home rather than a centre. Each educator runs their own small group, and an approved service like ours is responsible for making sure they meet the National Law and Regulations, the National Quality Standard and the Child Safe Standards.

In practice, that means we assess and approve every home before children attend, check every educator's qualifications, Working with Children Check and first aid, visit regularly, review programs, manage enrolments, and respond when families raise a concern.

Our educators focus on play-based learning informed by Montessori principles, strong relationships with families, and keeping children safe. Groups are small, and children spend their days with an educator who knows them.

Our founder

Danhua Chen

More than 15 years in early childhood education and family day care, and 26 years teaching languages.

Danhua has worked in family day care and early learning as a Room Leader, Nominated Supervisor, Coordinator and Educational Leader. Alongside that, she brings 26 years of experience in language teaching, with a background in curriculum planning and working closely with families.

That experience gave her a detailed understanding of the National Quality Framework, child safety, educational programming and family day care compliance. She set up Five Stars Learning to offer safe, high-quality care in a home setting, and to give educators the support they need to run professional, compliant services from their own homes.

How we support our educators

Good family day care depends on educators who are well supported. Our coordination team and Educational Leader, who holds a Bachelor of Education specialising in early years and primary teaching, work with every educator throughout the year.

  • Registration and home safety

We assess each home against the Regulations before approval, and keep checking it on regular visits.

  • Programming and documentation

Help with planning, observations and learning stories under the Early Years Learning Framework and My Time, Our Place.

  • Child safety and compliance

Training on the Child Safe Standards, mandatory reporting, safe sleep, medication, incidents and record keeping.

  • Enrolments and administration

We manage enrolments, attendance records and family paperwork, so educators can focus on children.

  • Professional development

Ongoing training and mentoring, and preparation for assessment and rating.

  • A point of contact for families

Families can always reach our office directly, not just their educator.
